PLANTED IN BEAUTY "Free From" Ingredients

Our skin is the body’s largest organ, absorbing up to 60% of what we put on it. Just as diet affects the way our entire bodies look and feel, skincare products impact our health from the inside out. The truth is that many skin care products and cosmetics contain toxic chemicals that can harm our health in ways far beyond just skin irritation.

When it comes to COSMETIC ingredients, PLANTED IN BEAUTY’s philosophy is that our products are derived from a natural origin, containing the highest level of organic ingredients possible while remaining chemical and toxin free. Here’s why:

Parabens

Preservatives that are used to prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. Parabens are scientifically proven to be endocrine disruptors, and can enter the body through the skin, blood and digestive system.

Petroleum

Anti-foaming agents and solvents (liquids used to dissolve other ingredients). Petroleum solvents and distillates have been linked to organ system toxicity.

Butylene Glycol

Organic alcohol used as a solvent and conditioning agent. Butylene glycol which is derived from petroleum may cause skin irritation and inflammation.

GMOs

Organisms with altered genetics that are derived from molecular biotechnology techniques. Studies on GMOs have shown various health risks including digestive issues, organ damage, immune reactions, skin conditions (including acne and eczema), accelerated aging, and other symptoms.

PEGs

Chemicals known as "humectants" used for solvents, thickeners, softeners, and moisture-carriers. PEG compounds are associated with organ system toxicity.

Phthalates

Industrial chemicals found in synthetic fragrances and various personal care products, as well as plastic bottles and plastic toys. Phthalates, a known carcinogen, have been associated with endocrine disruption, and particularly affect the male reproductive system. They have also been associated with developmental toxicity, leading to altered development during fetal cell differentiation.

Sulfates

Chemicals known as "surfactants" that are used as cleansing agents, emulsifying agents and foaming agents. Sulfates have been identified as possible endocrine disruptors, but are particularly known to be harmful because they penetrate the skin deeply, but are unable to be metabolized by the liver.

DEA, TEA, and MEA

Chemicals made up of amino acids and alcohols that act as everything from foaming agents to pH equalizers. DEA, TEA, and MEA (Ethanolamine Compounds) break down into nitrogen, and form new chemicals known as nitrosamines, which are known carcinogens. They are also associated with organ system toxicity and irritation of the skin, eyes or lungs.

Silicones

Substance derived from silica that is used to soften, smooth and moisten. Silicones have been identified as possible endocrine disruptors.

Formaldehyde

Preservatives that are used to prevent the growth of microbes. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is also associated with skin irritation and other forms of inflammation and allergic reactions.

Pesticides

Chemicals used by non-organic farmers to kill weeds and insects and are absorbed by plants as they grow. Pesticide exposure is most risky in children, as it contributes to problems in neurological development and can lead to impaired learning and issues with memory and attention.

Alcohol

Ethanol, which may be listed as SD alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or alcohol denat. (denatured alcohol), can be used as a preservative, astringent, stabilizer, emulsifier, carrier, solvent, or an element of fragrance. It can cause skin irritation and dryness that strips your skin’s natural moisture and immune barrier.

Artificial Dyes

Chemicals that change the coloring of products. Artificial dyes are believed to be cancer-causing agents.

Synthetic Fragrances

There are many chemicals that can be used as synthetic fragrances, though most products don't list the specific ingredients that make up a "fragrance." According to the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), there are at least 3,059 possible fragrance compounds linked to cancer, allergies and reproductive toxicity.

Synthetic Preservatives

Used to prevent contamination and product spoilage, whether from microbial growth or undesirable chemical changes. Synthetic preservatives can trigger allergic reactions, skin irritation, and have been associated with hormone disruption and linked to breast cancer.
